Medication Aide Class:

This 24-hour course is designed to meet the training requirements for the administration and medication especially in long-term care facilities. Requirements are a high school diploma and Nurse Assistant I certification (active). The course covers the six rights of medication administration for non-licensed personnel. Topics include medication administration via the oral, topical, and instillation routes, medical asepsis, hand hygiene, terminology, and medical implications. Upon completion, students should be able to take competency exams and demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry.

What is a Medication Aide and what are they allowed to do?

The following tasks are within the scope of practice for the NC  Medication Aide, unless prohibited by facility practice:

  • apply physician-ordered oral, ophthalmic, otic, nasal, vaginal and rectal medication;
  • crush and administer medications if appropriate;
  • count, administer and document controlled substances.

1.  Is a Medication Aide the same thing as a CNA II?   No.   A CNA II, is a certified nursing assistant II.  They are totally different and both require different training and testing to be listed on the registry.

2.  After I train to be a NC Medication Aide, can I work in a hospital passing medications?   No.  A Med Aide in North Cartolina does not pass out meds in a hospital setting.  You may have a better chance of receiving a hospital job as employment, but you will use this training in a nursing home or skilled nursing facility or assisted living facility.

3.  Will I have to take a state exam and how much does it cost?   Yes, you will take a state exam after completion of the course and then after passing the test, you will be placed on the NC Medication Aide Registry.  The state exam is $55.00.

4.  How often do you teach the Medication Aide class?   It depends.  I base my decision on interest level and through emails and phone calls about the program.   I have to have a minimum of four to hold a class and a maximum of ten students.  So, after I have enough interest, I open up another class.

 5. Are you certified to teach this class?   Yes, I am a RN Medication Aide Instrutor.  I am on the North Carolina Board of Nursing licensed to teach this class and this class is a state approved training program.  You will receive a completion certificate that is notorized when you finish with the program.

6.  What are the requirements to take this class?  You must be at least 18 years old, have your high school diploma or your GED and you must have your current NC CNA.  It must be current and active on the NC nurse aide registry.  You must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.

7.  Do I have to attend all the classes?   Yes, you will not receive your completion certificate if you miss any part of the class in part or in full.  Sorry, there are no exceptions to this.  I must follow NC standards and rules and regulations.  You can not come in late and you can not leave early from the class.

8.  Can I attend two of the three classes and then make up the other class at the next session?   NO.  You have to attend all the classes in your sessison.

9.   Do you have a "Home Study Program" for the Med Aide?   No,  you are not allowed.  You must attend the class and pass the skills portion in the class.   This is state certified program and you receive a completion certificate after passing the class.

10.   Where do I take the state exam for the Medication Aide after your class?   At one of these six testing locations...  Huntersville, Wilmington, Raleigh, Statesville, Asheville, or Greenville.   We go over all of this material in the class.

11.  Is a NC Medication Aide the same thing as a Medication Technician, sometimes referred to as a "Med Tech" ?  No.  But, many employers use the terms back and forth.  So, they may list their open employment for a Med Tech and they will hire a Med Aide.  A Medication Aide is a state certified individual listed on the NC Medication Aide registry.   http://www.ncnar.org/

12.  Do you offer this Med Aide program in Spanish?   No. This is only available in English.

13.  Can I test out or challenge the state exam for Medication Aide?   No.   You must attend a course.  After the completion, you will receive a signed application and certificate to allow you to take the state exam.

14.  What is the cost of the class?   $250.00 total at the Monroe or Greensboro location.   $300.00 total at the Raleigh location.

15.  What is the minimum and maximum number of students in a class?   There must be at least four students and a maximum of ten.

16.   When is the class?   View "Class Dates" on this website.

17.  Do I have to have my CNA to take the class?   No.  But, if you want to work in a skilled nursing center, you must have your NC CNA to work as a Medication Aide.   It is highly recommended to have your CNA or be currently in a CNA class, before taking the class for Medication Aide.

18.  Do I have to have my CPR to take the class?   No.  But, if you are applying for a job, most employers do require CPR certification.
